Suited for Success: Stop & Shop Empowers Chatham Students with Professional Attire
On February 21st, Chatham University students had the opportunity to take a significant step toward their professional futures at the Suited for Success: Stop & Shop event. Hosted in collaboration with Dress for Success Pittsburgh, this initiative provided students with free business attire and personal care items, helping them feel prepared and confident for upcoming job interviews, internships, and professional events.
For many students, finding professional clothing can be a challenge, both financially and logistically. Sarah Naccarato ‘27, a student who attended the event, shared how timely and valuable this opportunity was for her:
"The Suited for Success Stop and Shop event was a perfectly timed event because I was in need of some business clothes for some upcoming journalism conferences I am attending in New York City. As a college student, I typically don't have much time nor the budget for business clothes shopping, so it was much appreciated. I am glad that we have resources for accessible and sustainable clothing."
The impact of the event extended beyond just the clothing. Dress for Success Pittsburgh, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing professional attire and career development support, played a key role in ensuring that every student left with not just an outfit but also a boost in self-assurance. The head of the organization, Alex Marks, reflected on the significance of the event:
"My favorite part of the event was seeing students get what they needed—whether that was a full suit, just a blazer, or a bar of soap. That was at least one thing that they were able to check off their list by the time they left the event, and it was completely free of charge. Clothing is what we provide on a surface level, but the resulting impact is an increase in confidence. When students have an outfit that they feel comfortable and confident in, they know that they can say yes to scheduling a last-minute interview and that they can put their best self forward because they’re dressed for the role they want."
Students who attended the event echoed these sentiments, sharing their thoughts through surveys:
“I feel supported and happy that I could find something that fit me well.”
“I feel much more prepared for an interview and love having more than one outfit option!”
“Definitely a confidence boost. Also feeling less alone regarding discomfort in professional sphere.”
“I feel more excited in exploring my career!”
Volunteers, including Chatham alumna Susan Zimeck ‘70, also found the event rewarding. Reflecting on her experience, she emphasized the transformative power of professional clothing:
"It’s wonderful that internships are now part of a Chatham education—I only wish we had had these opportunities in my day! But how many students arrive at the university with interview-appropriate outfits? I’ve volunteered for Dress for Success for several years because, like it or not, a professional appearance will make a difference in an interview and on the job. More importantly, it will make a difference by boosting your confidence. I really enjoy helping people find clothing that truly works for them, especially when I see the glow that lights up their faces and the pride that lifts their posture."
Suited for Success: Stop & Shop was more than just a clothing drive—it was a confidence-building experience that prepared Chatham students to step into their professional journeys with pride. Through the generosity of Dress for Success Pittsburgh, dedicated volunteers, and a university community committed to student success, attendees walked away with much more than just an outfit. They left empowered, knowing they are ready to take on whatever comes next.
