After the success of the Resume Roast event on January 29, Olivia Harris interviewed Chatham Marketing Association (CMA) co-presidents Kylin Rosnick ‘25 (left) and Abby Musser ‘25 (right). Kylin is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in International Business, and Abby is pursuing a Master of Business Administration in Project Management. Read their answers below!
Question 1: What inspired you to create this event?
Abby: “The Chatham Marketing Association (CMA) is not only an interactive club on campus but is also registered as an official collegiate chapter with the American Marketing Association (AMA). Our affiliation with AMA provides our members and participating students with access to resources, networking opportunities, and professional development events related to marketing (and going to New Orleans every year for the marketing conference)! Every year our chapter plans our year by choosing a theme and focusing on numerous initiatives, one of them being Professional Development. This year our theme is 'Bridging Communities, Building Connections', so we've been meaning to partner with different organizations on campus. I had been scrolling on LinkedIn and saw another AMA student from a different chapter post about a Resume Roast and knew I wanted to do something similar. Our typical professional development events have consisted of guest speakers from companies like LinkedIn, ADP, Lime, and professionals who've worked with celebrities like Paris Hilton. Unfortunately, getting students to attend events is hard at Chatham. It was the perfect opportunity to leverage our theme and connect with Career Development to host an event for the student's benefit.”
Kylin: “What inspired me to create this event was everything Abby said! But also, I feel like being a small school sometimes students feel like they lack the help for professional development which is not true. With career development and CMA hosting an event it was an opportunity to allow students to feel as if they do have resources to develop their professional skills here at Chatham. I also wanted it to be fun but educational.”
Question 2: How do you see this event fitting into your personal and professional development? / What did you learn or gain from this?
Abby: “I felt that over my Chatham Career I've learned a lot on how to present yourself via resume and LinkedIn, especially from being in the business program. I'm recognize my ignorance to how other majors or program might not have had as much guidance in this area. The opportunity to host this event with Career Development meant that I could use what I've learned to help other majors. It makes me very happy to know that students who had attended were able to gain insights on their resumes, get professional headshots, sharpen their interview skills, and enhance their social media profiles. From a club perspective, it reinforces how important communities and connections are when working together.”
Kylin: “As being co-presidents with Abby, I am learned how to plan and organize events from start to finish. We are learning how to market events and we have become successful. Turnout for events has continued to grow year after year for CMA. Being able to work with Abby and exectue events has taught me to be a team player as well. CMA has become my favorite thing I do at Chatham because I work with the best people while getting to build my marketing skills.”
Question 3: What was your favorite part or outcome of the event?
Abby: “A few of my favorite parts about this event were working with Hannah was 10/10 a great experience, she helped to make our vision come alive, and we couldn't have done it without her and Career Development. I loved that we were able to collaborate and pull off a fantastic event. I loved the results. I loved that we were able to help over 40 students! I was glad to sit down with 5 or 6 students and go over the benefits of using LinkedIn. Students were engaged and asking questions, it was really great to bestow my wisdom on the younger class.”
Kylin: “I loved seeing all the students come together and gain new skills. So many students had questions about how to build a resume and I felt so eager to help. I love to work with others, and I love to help others. Resume Roast was a perfect event for both. I hope CMA continues to build presence on campus because we have so much to offer even for students not in the marketing field. CMA is a place for everyone to build skills.”
